About signing with Aadhaar
What Aadhaar eSign actually is
Aadhaar eSign is an online signature service defined by the Controller of Certifying Authorities. You authenticate your identity against UIDAI using the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and a licensed eSign Service Provider issues a short-lived signing certificate in your name for that one signature.
Because the certificate is bound to a UIDAI-verified identity, the resulting signature carries the legal effect of a handwritten one under section 5 of the IT Act, 2000.
Where your Aadhaar number goes
Nowhere near this application. Only a licensed eSign Service Provider may collect an Aadhaar number or an OTP, and only on a page it operates. This application sends the provider a digest of your document and receives a signature back.
The audit trail keeps the last four digits and the name UIDAI returned, which is what lets a signature be attributed later without holding identity data that should not be held.
What makes the signature verifiable
The signature is not a picture of a signature. The document is digested, the digest is signed, and the resulting PKCS#7 structure is embedded in the PDF alongside a visible appearance.
Open the signed file in any reader that checks signatures and it will tell you who signed, when, and whether a single byte has changed since. That check works offline and does not depend on this website continuing to exist.
Common questions
Is an Aadhaar eSign legally valid in India?
Yes. An Aadhaar eSign is an electronic signature under section 3A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and section 5 gives it the same legal effect as a handwritten signature. The signing certificate is issued by a Certifying Authority licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities.
Do you store my Aadhaar number?
No. Your Aadhaar number and OTP are entered on the eSign Service Provider's own page and are never sent to this application. Only the last four digits are retained, in the audit trail, so a signature can be matched to a signatory later.
How long are my documents kept?
Uploaded and signed documents are deleted automatically after 24 hours. The audit record is retained, because it contains no document content and is what you need if a signature is ever disputed.
Can the signed PDF be verified without this website?
Yes. The signature is embedded in the PDF as a standard PKCS#7 detached signature. Any reader that validates digital signatures, including Adobe Acrobat Reader, will confirm the signer's identity and show whether the document has been altered since signing.
What happens if the document is edited after signing?
The signature covers the exact bytes of the document at the moment of signing. Any later change breaks the cryptographic digest, and a PDF reader will report the signature as invalid.
Which files can be signed?
Any PDF that is not encrypted or password-protected. Remove the password first, then upload it.
